Assisted Suicide/Euthanasia around the world.

Many people have seen someone suffer or in pain. Doctors believe by assisting suicide they are relieving the patient from all its pain. Normally any person would think that they are relieving them from pain but really assisted suicide is murder and it should be illegal in all countries.

Where do countries stand in assisted suicide/euthanasia?

Canada- assisted suicide and euthanasia is illegal.
Netherlands- was the first country to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia in 2002. Although it is legal there are strict orders that assisted suicide is only allowed for those that are terminally ill and are incurable.
Belgium- was the second country to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia in 2002. They are allowed to assist upon a patients wish.
France- euthanasia and assisted suicide is illegal.
United states- euthanasia is illegal however doctors are allowed to prescribe lethal drugs ad medication to the terminally ill. This is only allowed in 5 states. Oregon was the first state to allow assisted suicide in 1997.
Germany- assisted suicide is legal as long at the lethal drug is taken without any help.
Switzerland- allows assisted suicide as long as the drug is taken without any help.

Every person’s story is different sometimes assisted suicide is needed but usually it’s just a patients choice. It’s a choice that they don’t really want to make but end up making it to take the weight off their family. In my opinion assisted suicide should be illegal all around the world because every person has the right to live and die naturally even when they are terminally ill. There are drugs out there that do help slow down the illness which can give more time for the patient to spend time with their family. In today’s society assisted suicide has a lot of compromise where it is believed that it is accepted in today’s world.

Economic Aspect of Euthanasia

“Time to die” is what some people say when they think about their life coming to an end. Why would someone want to end their life when they could have so much more time with their friends and family? The question varies for everyone but one major aspect that considers to be an issue is finances in every family.
Patients that are in hospitals and consider euthanasia have a different mentality when it comes to wanting to die to help their family. Being hospitalized can cost families thousands of dollars, it can put families in depth and make it harder for them to pay for health care. Obviously no one wants to be a burden for their family and so they turn to the idea of euthanasia.

Different types of reasons a patient would consider euthanasia is:
·         Hospital bills are less expensive
·         People don’t have money to pay for their families to stay at a hospital which puts the family in depth.
·         Patient that wants to pass away think they take up room in the hospital and want doctors focus on different patients.
When one person decides that they want to die they usually don’t change their mind and it makes it harder on family members because no family would want their loved ones to die. The annual cost for a person to stay at a hospital average around $30,000-40,000 thousand dollars but for the drug to commit assisted suicide can average from $30.00-40.00.

The issue of euthanasia still remains a hot topic today which rises the issues is it right or is it wrong? Some might think that its right because its less stress for the families but some wouldn’t even consider it because family means to much to them. Some people might argue that it’s considered to be murder and inhumane, it all depends on the person and their perspective of the topic.

What is assisted suicide?

In today's world there is much compromise where it is believed that assisted suicide could or could not be socially acceptable. Practices such as euthanasia creates a discomfort in the field of medicine alone, but in specific cases where cures are claimed to be "rare", it's is almost looked upon as an acceptable practice in today's society. Thus we go into the topic of assisted suicide and its traits to define the overall controversy around it.

In some countries assisted suicide is not yet legal but in some the vote for legalizing assisted suicide has already passed. Statistics show that 85% of people in Ontario are for assisted suicide and the numbers will just get higher. Doctors have argued that it’s not morally right to let someone die because they want to, but in some cases doctors don’t have a word in what is moral and what’s not. Patience that want to die are patience that suffer for long periods of time and have enough of the ache of having to live like that. Do you believe that this is the right thing to do? In this blog I will explain what assisted suicide and euthanasia is so that it’s easier for people to answer the question.

The difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide is that you’re purposely ending a person’s life so that the person will not suffer. As for assisted suicide you’re assisting in encouraging a person to end their life.

Euthanasia can be classified as:

  • Passive euthanasia-when death is caused by not giving treatment
  • Active euthanasia- when someone gets involved in ending one's life
  • Voluntary euthanasia- when someone gives consent to help them die
  • Non-voluntary euthanasia- when a person is unconscious to give consent
  • Involuntary euthanasia- when someone is killed against their own will

Assisted Suicide being a very sensitive topic has led me to the conclusion that aiding it should be illegal. Supporting this practice is both in humane and hinders the very basics of a balanced society. In regards to my main points it should be socially unacceptable and proper injunction should be in order to refrain this specific act.
